Selectmen Meet March 8th

by Bobby Blair 3/9/10

The Housing Committee (below) came before the Board of Selectmen to review the status of the Andrew School.

The former school once slated for 40B (low income housing) and vacant for a number of years is becoming a drain on town resources. Selectmen told the Housing Committee that it may be almost til the end of the year before a clear title to the building can be resolved before the courts.

A house which once stood on the property and now stands on Washington Street had its former land donated to the town as long as that land was used as part of a school. The land would revert back to the family should the school be converted to another use. No known relatives of the former owners are known  to exist, although the search continues as far away as California. In the meantime the building sits empty, and visited by youngsters up to no good.

In other news the Assessors Department will forego salary increases to come within budget, as was likewise the case with the Youth and Family Services Department. The Conservation Commission will not be seeing any increase in salary for its agent Patricia Brennan and she may lose hours should a worst case scenario of a 3% reduction in budget come to pass.

What was wrong with the Andrew School in the first place? Why did the town opt to build a new school and vacate it? It's unfortunate it is empty..
