1. A Day in the Life of an ASP Volunteer
by Grace Ballenger 9/4/10
St, Michael's Church Sends Youth Volunteers to Appalachia This summer, St. Michael’s Episcopal Church sent twelve young people, together with four adult leaders, to spend a week working with the Appalachian Service Project (ASP), a long-established organization that supports house repairs for low-income families in Appalachia. One of the young people, Grace Ballenger, wrote the following account to give church members an idea of her experiences. The Rev. Christine Whittaker. The Saint Michael's volunteers gather at Saint Michel's Episcopal church before leaving on their mission trip. (From left to right) Cathy Harper, Chris Hagen, Sam Rider, Mark Fitzgerald, Grace Ballenger, Elizabeth Plume, Abbey Campbell, Doug Hathaway, Karla Garvin, John Fitzgerald, Kelsey Harper, Emily Rider, Raeburn Hathaway, Mason Waltner, C.J. Harper, Tom Waltner. .......... In July I was given the incredible opportunity to journey to West Virginia with fifteen other volunteers from Saint Michael’s. We were away for nine days, and spent five days in West Virginia working on two different houses. We spent part of each day in work, in fellowship, and in prayer. Here I will attempt to share what a day from ASP is like.

Old Barns Get Older Old barns are fascinating, and imagine the stories they could tell. Two years ago I wrote an article on old barns in Northern New England, and a recent trip to the north country renewed my interest.

13. The Doors of Chester, England
by Paul Saulnier 8/18/10
The Doors of Chester, England (One year ago on HR) While on "holiday" in Chester, England, I was struck by the beauty of this ancient walled city, built by the Romans well over 1000 years ago. Chester is home to the the largest Roman colliseum outside of Rome itself, and many very old buildings survive. But the doors are especially interesting as I was reminded of Holliston's poster of doors. Here then is a poster of the Doors of Chester.

19. Local Students Find a Haven at ABT
by Krista Harper 8/2/10
Local Students Find a Haven at ABT (Blyn poses in front of her Hummer, which, she says, is probably her trademark in Holliston. In 2008, Blyn pulled her Hummer around the parking lot of ABT for MetroWest Daily News. The video is available on YouTube.) For most small business owners, the first few years of operation are a struggle. In the constant uphill battle to stay in the black, most small-scale entrepreneurs don’t have much time to go for a jog, nevermind win national powerlifting competitions. But local business owner Liane Blyn is not your average entrepreneur. Blyn, who owns and operates Athletic Based Training in Holliston, won the Women’s Powerlifting Nationals in her weight division this May. At the same competition, she broke an American women’s record in her weight class by bench-pressing 341 pounds.

by Sarah R. Commerford 7/27/10
The Mod Squad It's 1970 and I'm in my hometown 5th grade classroom at the Peabody School in Cambridge, MA. Today is Friday -- geography quiz day. My sweltering classroom smells faintly of paste, sour milk cartons and ten year old bodies, almost, but not quite ready for deodorant.
