Years of Spanish Studies Culminate in a Trip to Spain!!!

by Meg Porter
March 24, 2015

The foreign language programs offered in the Holliston school system attracts many newcomers. This year 12 Spanish students and their teachers will travel to Spain.

Shown above are the lucky students and their brave and eager teachers/chaperones who will travel to Barcelona and Madrid over April vacation. Top row, left to right are: Evan Londono-Ayr, Andres Albornoz, Kate Healy, Laura Labb, Amber Mitchell, Julia DeMarkey with their teacher Ms. Elizabeth Moreno. Bottom row left to right are: Teacher Ms. Kim Buturlia, with students Beth Radcliffe, Beth Cronin, Sarah Sykes and Medha Sthalekar.

It has been ten years since Holliston High students have traveled with their classmates and teachers to the country where the foreign language they have studied is native. While in their classroom,  the conversations centered around food allergies, arrival times at the airport, the costs of tipping their bus drivers and travel guides and room assignments at their hotel. Excitement filled the room. These students feel fortunate to be offered this opportunity.

"This is a great culmination of all the years of study," shared Ms. Moreno. "It places importance on what they do and experience in class and brings background into practice."

When I asked the kids what they looked forward to they said; traveling to and experiencing another culture, speaking Spanish, taking pictures, seeing ancient structures, eating different foods and, of course, shopping. Trinkets, T-shirts and other memorabilia will be brought back home to remind them of this great opportunity.

Their journey includes two days of travel and six days of sightseeing. They will experience ancient architecture, cathedrals, parks, museums,  the 1992 Olympic Village, Royal Palaces, Cafe's, open air markets and whatever else they can squeeze in. I'll bet everyone will be thrilled and exhausted when they return. Kudos to the two teachers who will oversee, coordinate and counsel these kids throughout this experience.

When I was a 10th grade student at HHS (back in 1975!!!), our Spanish Teacher (Ann Bernard) took us to Spain. It was the start of a great journey for me. I am now a Spanish Teacher (high school and college) and I take my kids abroad every year. Kudos to the teachers and students for making this happen again. What a great experience!

Que les vaya bien!!!

I don’t know about you, but for the last month or so when I drive through town, I notice the flag in front of Holliston Town Hall. It has been at half-staff for weeks/months. I want to know why, it bothers me.
