Conservation Associates to Host Bird Walk at the Waseeka Audubon

by Mary Curran
June 20, 2018

On Saturday, June 23 at 8:00 AM, the Holliston Conservation Associates are hosting a bird walk at the Waseeka Audubon Property, led by Donna Cohen.

We have walked this property a number of times over the past several years and it is always a treat.  While we cannot guarantee what we will see on this nature walk, in the past we have seen nesting osprey, eastern kingbird, and pileated woodpecker.  Many other species were seen or heard including tree swallow, red wing blackbird, grackle, great blue heron, green heron, mourning dove, blue jay, great crested flycatcher, crow, eastern towhee, American robin, black-capped chickadee, goldfinch, ovenbird, song sparrow, common yellowthroat, scarlet tanager, Baltimore oriole, Northern cardinal, eastern wood pewee, and wood duck.  Around the pond we have also seen other creatures such as bullfrogs, greenfrogs, painted turtles, and snapping turtles.  This time of year, there are blooming flowers and other plants to observe as well.

There is a parking lot among the trees on Mill St.  It will be on your right if you come from the golf course end.  You have passed the lot if you reach Partridge Rd. in Hopkinton.  For more information, call Mary at 429-5929.  If it is raining, we will not be walking that day.

The walk is an easy one, perhaps a mile in all, and this property is a gem.  Bring binoculars if you have them.  We recommend long pants to guard against poison ivy and ticks.  We hope you will join us for the first time or again!

Mimosa Maiden Hair Tree

by Mark Ahronian

This zone seven tree is more suitable for Cape Cod. However, here in Holliston there are a few that are in enough of a protected spot from the North wind that will allow them to flourish . Planted on the South easterly side makes a difference.
