It's Spring - Signs Are Popping Up In Mudville

by Chris Cain
April 4, 2019

Out with the old - in with the new!

Publishers' Note: Unbeknown to me, Bobby Blair was capturing information for a story on the same topic.  I combined the two efforts here.

Town Administrator, Jeff Ritter reported to the Selectmen at this Monday's meeting that new stop signs would be installed in Mudville starting on Monday.  Old faded signs like the one below from the corner of Pleasant and Union (please note the lichen camouflage) have been replaced by signs that are visible from hundreds of feet away.

New stop signs are being added on School, Union, and Spring Streets.  Please note that the intersection of School and Union is now a three-way stop.

Nick Murray of the Highway Department is seen here installing a post on School Street to that will make the intersection of School and Mechanic a 4-way stop.

Mayor Blair used his unique vantage point to do a quick survey, "I noted 50 vehicles pass through the Union / School intersection between 4:40 pm and 5 pm. 27 vehicles came to complete stops, 8 vehicles rolled through, and 15 vehicles were oblivious to the signs. Sorry, folks, not a scientific study, just a sampling."

Additional signage will be added in the coming days.  Stop lines and crosswalks will soon be painted at these intersections to further improve traffic flow and pedestrian safety. Please be alert to the new traffic signs throughout Mudville.  We hope it will be a short learning curve for drivers in Mudville.

Not sure that stop signs improve traffic flow any more than the lights on Washington but they beat speed bumps.
