The Early Worms Get the Trout!

by Chris Cain
May 7, 2019

The Holliston Sportsmen's Association Trout Derby was held 'rain or shine.'  Given our recent weather - you guessed it - it was rainy.  The trout didn't seem to mind the weather and seemed to have a hearty appetite'

Saturday morning May 4th dawned (?) with clouds and showers.  That did not deter avid anglers from arriving at the Sportsmen's Association trout pond at 6:00 am.  Fishing began at 7:00 and the freshly stocked trout demonstrated their hunger during the first hour of action.

The Association purchased 100 pounds of trout - roughly 75 - 80 fish - to make this year's derby a big hit - especially for those who caught fish.

James Caldwell shows off a freshly caught rainbow trout to add to his stringer.  He ended up with 9 fish.

Samantha Kelly, below, took home two prizes: The First Fish and the Biggest Fish - 15 inches long!  Congratulations Samantha!!

While Samantha and James were cleaning out the fish in the pond, Ben and Julia Furey (our grandchildren) were cleaning out the pond of debris.  They managed to leave with consolation prizes from the organizers and a determination to 'get up REALLY early next year!"

The rainy weather didn't appear to dampen anyone's spirits.  Great job and thank you to the Holliston Sportsmen's Association for putting on this family-friendly event.
