Local Resident Ponders Use of Farm for Outdoor Classes

by Bobby Blair
July 21, 2019

Meg Boggess below center met with the Community Farm Advisory Committee Thursday night to discuss her idea of operating an outdoor pre-school class at the community farm. Boggess told the board that the classes which are held outside would be for 31/2 to 6 years of age and would be held most likley in the mornings. Boggess cited a similiar program held at Tangerini's Farm in Millis as an example. Boggess was also interested in the house located on the property. Committee member Dennis Serocki told Boggess that the house remains unusable due to a cracked foundation and the need for handicapped assessability as well as handicapped bathrooms. A new sewage system to the house was completed earlier this spring.

Boggess is looking for a fall 2020 start time. Chairwoman Kris Westland said her comittee will take Boggess' request under advisement and will be giving Boggess a tour of the house in the next few weeks.

In other farm news it was noted that the field has now been planted with a cover crop of buckwheat, clover, oats and sudanese grass. The plantings mark the third year cover crops have been planted to improve the soil.

Committee members once again reviewed a proposed conservation restriction as well as suggested new signs for the farm.

The farm advisory board will hold several "home composting" workshops in the coming weeks. Residents are invited to attend the short and free class. The dates are Wednesday July 31st at 6:30 pm and Wednesday August 7th at 6:30 pm. The classes will be held at the farm at 34 Rogers Road.

We could never meet our goals without the support of our amazing sponsors! . . . This year, we would like to profile a few of those sponsors and let them explain to you, in their own words, why they chose to support our event and what Holliston means to them.
