One Year Ago on HR: Oprah Bound?

Ever since she can remember, Maria Salomao-Schmidt has wanted to be on the Oprah Show.

A dream come true.

Ever since Maria Salomao-Schmidt saw Oprah Winfrey in Boston while a student at Simmons School of Management, she has set her "goal to be on the Oprah Show." That dream may soon come true.

Schmidt was in California swimming when a rip tide almost ended her life. As she was being swept out to sea she had already begun planning her own funeral when the idea that she had not been on the Oprah Show yet entered her mind. "That's when I began shouting for help."  A certified lifeguard herself was too proud to call for assistance, she told me on a gray Thursday morning.

Oprah's Show would once again effect Schmidt when her daughter Sophia (a down syndrome baby) passed away four years ago. It couldn't have felt worse than if I had my own heart ripped out, Schmidt recalled with her eyes misting. But I recalled an old Oprah Show where an angry mother appeared who had just lost one of her twins. It was that moment, the only thing which helped Schmidt get through her loss. In an email to the Oprah Show, Schmidt told producers how she wished she could thank the woman, who through her loss had helped Schmidt.

For those who haven't met Maria or husband Doug and kids, you're missing a treat. Doug owns "Doug Sent Me Cleaners" and Maria, the "Brickhouse Realty" in the center of town. Maria's the type of person that, once you've met her, you feel like you've known her your whole life. Full of life, Maria and a hand full of friends organized a benefit earlier this year in under two week for victims of the earthquake in Haiti which raised thousands of dollars. Schmidt has her own blog called Butterflymoms which can be viewed here ----http://butterflymoms.wordpress.com/2010/06/09/lets-get-jekyll-with-it/

When first reached by an Oprah producer, Schmidt was dumbfounded. A realist, Schmidt knows that her chances of being on the show, while heightened, may not materialize. But according to Schmidt, just a call from a producer of the Oprah show in itself was exhilarating. Schmidt said she'll call the show in the next few weeks to find out about her appearance, and if "it still has legs".

And the rest, as they say, is history.
