Newcomers Club 10K Race a Success

Unlike in Hopkinton, no policemen were run down during the start of the race.

May 15, 2011. The First Annual 10K Race, hosted by the Newcomers Club, was blessed with cool temperatures and a break in the rain.

Runners could arrive as early as 7:30 AM and be registered, watered, and even buy a raffle ticket or two.

There were lots of cameras around and press coverage from some of the lesser known news agencies in town.

This Red Tailed Hawk had the pole position to watch the start of the race.

Just before 9:00 am, runners were ushered to the starting line by volunteers, and...

...all were ready for the 9:00 am start.

The finish line was set for the first runner to arrive after an expected 40 minutes from the start.

Richard Bragge of Brookline set the fastest time of 38 minutes, 11 seconds.

This gentleman was second but kept running and disappeared.

Les Steinbrecher, originally from Holliston but now living in Bellingham, came in third and suspected that he might qualify for first in the senior division at the ripe old age of 50.

Two thirteen year-olds from Hopedale Track, Thomas Spiller, above, and Alex Haynes, below, finished eighth (43:08) and thirteenth (45:47) respectively.

The 10K Race Committee included Tim Rotz, Julie Damigella, Maura Haley, and Kristen Collins. Will Brown, a member of Newcomers, finished a very respectible sixth overall.

There were over 100 runners in the race which garnered about $3,000.00 that the Newcomers will distribute to the various organizations they have supported over the years, including the public schools, police, Food Pantry, Council for the Arts, and the Historical Society, to name a few. All the race signs along the course were taken down after the race. Nice to see.
