Saturday Morning Trap Shooting

by Paul Saulnier 10/8/11

Shooting at clay "pigeons" is fun and affordable on the grounds of the Holliston Sportsmen's Association on scenic Bullard Street Saturday mornings from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

Saturday, October 8, 2011 was unusually warm and brought out about 15 people wanting to hone their skills or learn what trap shooting is all about.

This group was there early and ready to go before 10:00 but the association respects its neighbors and sticks to the time constraints. Safety is also a priority. No guns are loaded if not on the firing line and only one cartridge is allowed in a shot gun at any time.

Frank Matyi is president of the association, which currently has about 120 members. The property includes approximately 15 acres, most of which is heavily wooded.

On any given Saturday, these members of the Trap Committee might be there to help novices and prospective new members try the range and look over the facilities. They are, l to r, Rey Fortney, Dave Thistle, Dave Rancey, Bill Hawley. Ken Fisher Sr., and his son Ken Jr.

When it's time, five shooters line up at the stations. The first person loads and aims down range. Dave Thistle, above, yells "pull" when he is ready and a clay disc is thrown in one direction within about a 44 degee arc. He fires when he sees the target emerge from behind a concrete wall.

Then the shooter at station two repeats the process. Each shooter fires five rounds from each of the five stations for a total of 25 rounds. Then another five shooters step up to the line to test their skills. The cost to participate is only $10.00 per round or $3.00 if you bring your own ammunition. Hot dogs and hamburgers were available this day as well.

If you don't own a shot gun but still would like to try this sport, let them know ahead of time by email (Holliston.trap@gmail.com) that you are coming, and arrangements will be made to accommodate you.

Those two orange dots were one orange dot a second ago. Nice shot.

The association also has an indoor pistol range available to members.

I had fun last Saturday; I didn't break many targets as I am still new to trap shooting. I will be there this Saturday for some more shooting and maybe a free hotdog.

Great to see the HSC Trap active! I invited two friends who had never shot trap before and they loved it. Great weather and tasty food off the grill. We welcome non-members and new shooters. Come check it out!

As treasurer of the HSA I was so pleased to see a good turnout of trap shooters at the club and such positive reporting by the Holliston Reporter. As one of the "oldest shooting sports" in the USA and England "trap shooting" is a fun and family oriented event which develops respect and safe handling of firearms (Shotguns only of course) as priority for all participants.

Thanks for the great article! If you have never shot a round of trap, stop in Holliston Firearms and pick up a coupon for a free round of trap at HSA. www.hollistonfirearms.com

I am the Vice-President of the HSA. I was unable to attend the shoot on the 8th but am glad that the Holliston Reporter posted positive reporting on the shooting sports. I look forward to seeing new faces at the club and a renewed interest in the shooting sports.

I'm a member of the club and recently joined the trap committee to help ramp things up at Holliston Sportmen's Association. It's a great place to shoot and we welcome new shooters to come try out the sport. Someone always has an extra shotgun with them for new shooters to borrow.
