This Old Bat

Originally destined for the woodstove, antique bat resurfaces while cleaning a closet...

Back in the early 70's Michael Moore of Prospect Street was visiting friend Peter Capon of Curve Street. While in the basement Moore noticed a baseball bat in a pile of wood destined to be cut up and placed in the Capon's woodstove. Moore asked Capon if he could keep the bat. Capon agreed and Moore took the bat home. Now married with grown children Moore was recently cleaning out a closet and came across the long forgotten stick of wood placed there nearly forty years ago.

With markings that are well worn but still visible Moore, along with neighbor and relative Mike Themeli, researched the bat online to see just how old the bat may be. "Reach League 1/0" were the marking visible on the bat. According to Moore (pictured above) the bat was made from 1900 to 1905 when the bats went out of production.

Whether the bat is of value or not, Moore is unsure. So what will Moore do with the 100 plus year old piece of Americana. "I think I'll probably just hang it on the wall," Moore told the HollistonReporter.com. Wouldn't John "Choo- Choo" Shannahan of the local Mudville Vintage Baseball Team love to get his hands on this.
