New Home Needed

by Bobby Blair 12/16/11

On Friday morning I traveled down to our Mother Town of Sherborn...

The Peace Abbey in Sherborn will be closing soon due to financial difficulties. Opened in 1988, the Abbey is looking for a new home for its "Tribute to U.S. Military Killed in Iraq".

I was welcomed to the Abbey by Dot Walsh (above) who took me downstairs where the Tribute was located. On the entire wall facing the main street were thousands of wrist bands with the names of those who have been kiled in Iraq.

Each bracelet is made of paper and covered in thin plastic. The Tribute is the creation of Madeline Champagne. The Tribute covers the length of the wall for almost 40 feet. I spoke with Champagne via phone while at the Abbey. She told me that just eight of the bracelets are missing plus those who have been killed in the last several months. She'd be willing to make those missing bracelets if someone was realy interested in the display. Those honored do not include servicemen or woman killed in Afghanistan.

Because of my involvement with the American Legion's Streets of Honor - Roads of Sorrow semi-annual tribute to Americans killed in both wars, Walsh thought I may be interested and know of someone who could take the Tribute off the Abbey's hands. No one has yet come to this writer's mind - hence this story. While I will contact several veteran's organizations, anyone who is interested may contact Walsh at 508-655-2143.

Bob, I would think the veterans who maintain the chapel at Cushing might be interested in displaying this unique tribute. The Framingham VSO would be the contact.

Could the bracelets be displayed at local libraries in the area, a moveable memorial where people could view them until a permanent home could be found.
