Trash and Recycling Pick Up Day?

by Bill Tobin 12/26/11

Just when is trash day?

Monday was an official holiday, no postal service, stock market closed etc. which usually means no trash pick up until the next day, and all pick ups are off a day--but not this week.

Christmas, December 25 was on Sunday, but the official holiday was on Monday, which presumably would be a no trash pick up day. But not this time.

No one exoected that trash would be picked up on Monday,  in my neighborhood anyway. No one had their barrels roadside in wait. But the sight of the trash truck did alert a few homeowners who scurried to get the barrels out in time. Some did make it. In questioning a driver about this unusual pick up, he explained that the drivers do not like working on Saturday, which is what happens when each day is moved up a day. I do not blame them for feeling this way at all, especially when this coming Saturday is New Years Eve.

Somehow  or someone should have alerted the Monday trash customers that there was a change in plans, and the Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday folks as well . So stick to your original day this week.

What about next week?  Monday, January 2, 2012 is an official holiday, New Year's Day.

HollistonReporter.com will try to get the answer and relay it to our readers.

Note: the trash trucks did a later run down our street in case of late barrels. AT

It's far from our biggest problem. I have written about some of them elsewhere in the "Comments" section on this site. However, it's a great example of a system that is not well aligned with its customers' (residents) interests or concerns. It's just a highly visible symptom of a bureaucracy that has forgotten why it is there in the first place. I got an e-mail, text message and voicemail reminding me to complete the police community service survey. They even used the electronic signboard for the survey. The only way I found out that my trash was being collected on a legal holiday was when I heard the truck turn the corner. Those who were irritated by this snafu would do well to start paying closer attention, ask more questions, and insist on real answers. I have, and my discoveries have been disturbing.

If this is the worst of this town's problems, we are living charmed lives, indeed...

I just read in the Patch that trash will also run a regular non-holiday schedule next week. It really would be nice to have this info posted for all to see....as in the sign board I suggested earlier.

I looked on the town website after reading the article here and found this. "HOLIDAYS Whenever a scheduled collection day falls on a holiday, that day's collection and all remaining collections for the week will be delayed one day. Friday's collection will be on Saturday. Holidays observed are: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Day, Presidents' Day, Patriot's Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans' Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas." http://www.townofholliston.us/Information%20Sheet%20-%20Solid%20Waste%20and%20Recycling.pdf I had assumed that because the holiday was being observed on Monday that the trash would be delayed a day- but after looking at the infomation posted online it's does say that it's only delayed if the holiday falls on a trash day.

It would be very helpful to have had this information posted somewhere prominently (like the HPD sign board that they use for many other things). We Monday customers, who were not made aware, will have 2 holidays work of thrash and recycling. Sigh.

It would be helpful if the town website let us know what the trash schedule is when there's some doubt.

I also have Monday trash pick-up and was surprised to hear the driver at 7:00 Monday morning coming down Phipps Hill since our trash was not out. BUT we put the trash out last night hoping they might come again today AND THEY DID.

This is just the sort of thing that ought to show up prominently on the promised re-vamp to the town's official website. Thanks as always for the service Mr. Mayor!

Thank you for the article! We were wondering what the situation was. Sorry that we learned of it because it bit others first.

We put our barrels out this morning as did most along Washington St. Whoops!

Thank you do much for this article! I was expecting trash to be delayed a day and I would have missed it completely!

The trash truck went by my house 3 times, maybe thinking we would put some out. I was at least able to get the recycling out, but just barely.

The folks in Mudville were blindsided also. An easy day for the trash guy I suppose, but he'll pay for it next week and so won't we with an extra $2 for a trash sticker. A drop in the bucket compared to taxes going up a few hundred bucks. Happy New Year!
