A Yogic Twist on New Year's Resolutions

by Roberta Weiner 12/30/11

Dear Yoga students and friends,

A Yoga "intention" is a wonderful way to create lasting, positive change.  Instead of a resolution that may be self-judgmental, try for a fresh start in 2012 like this:

1. First - What would you like to change in 2012?   Let's take the most common resolution - losing weight.

(A typical New Year's resolution might be - this is the year I'm going to finally lose those 10 pounds!  I'll stop eating anything white!  No ice cream or bread!  I'll run on the treadmill 30 minutes a day!)

2. Instead - rephrase this resolution gently, in the present tense, as if it is already true.  For example, "I am a healthy eater," or "I enjoy movement and stretching."

3.  Repeat the intention to yourself each morning.  You can simply say it once or you can incorporate it as a mantra into a meditation practice.

4.  One day, with regular practice, you will realize that your intention has come true, and that you're ready to move on to a new intention.

So many of you have told me that practicing Yoga has brought  positive changes to your life.   This weekend we will have two special classes that will include Yogic intention setting - Saturday and Sunday 9-10 a.m.  (Yes, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day!) Drop-ins are always warmly welcomed.

Thank you for practicing Yoga with me this year, and for supporting our little community here in Holliston.

Namaste (the light in me honors the light in you),
Roberta
