Where's The Ice?

by Bobby Blair 1/7/12

In any normal year fishermen and skaters would abound on Lake Winthrop         (photo: January 22, 2009)

With temperatures hovering in the low 50's on Saturday and a very thin sheet of ice covering Lake Winthrop, one has to wonder if there will be any ice fishing this season.

Driving down the Point Road on Saturday I ran into Nat Simkins who was out walking his dog. "Any ice?" I said. Simkins is afraid there won't be enough ice for the yearly Fire and Ice event sponsored by the Lake Winthrop Watershed Association. The photo above shows a long stretch in the lake not far from the state boat ramp that is still lacking even a thin coat of ice.

A lack of activity above at Weston Pond in Braggville on Sunday also signalled that the ice is not safe. There's still plenty of time this winter for ponds to freeze over and for a snow storm or two. Night time temperatures for the coming week will all fall below freezing except on Thursday. Get those skates ready.
