BYOD meeting with Parents/Superintendent

by Superintendent Brad Jackson 1/18/12

Effective January 25, 2012, the ban on student-provided laptops or tablet computers will be lifted andall High School students will be encouraged to bring their own laptop or tablet computer to school with them when school opens in late-August 2012.

A  BYOD Parent Information Night will be held on Thursday, January 19, 2012 at 7PM in the Holliston High School Library.  The evening will begin with a presentation and will conclude with a Question and Answer session.

In mid-November, we announced significant changes to our policies at Holliston High School regarding student-owned technology.  The announcement centered on our efforts to transition Holliston High School into a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) school where students would be allowed to use their own laptop or tablet computer in school, much as they currently use technology in the “outside world.”  To this end, we announced that, effective January 25, 2012, the ban on student-provided laptops or tablet computers will be lifted and that all High School students will be encouraged to bring their own laptop or tablet computer to school with them when school opens in late-August 2012.

This announcement has understandably generated many questions and some concerns as families, each with its own unique set of circumstances, react to the significance of the change that will happen.  In order to provide a place where those questions and concerns can be addressed thoughtfully, we developed a BYOD webpage: http://www.holliston.k12.ma.us/high/byod.html where we post the latest information regarding this new initiative.

However, some parents have asked us to provide a more interactive opportunity for parents to learn more about our BYOD initiative.

To meet that request, we will be holding a BYOD Parent Information Night on Thursday, January 19, 2012 at 7PM in the Holliston High School Library.  The evening will begin with a presentation and will conclude with a Question and Answer session.

Please note that this session will be for parents only.  We have already held an all-school assembly for the students and we are currently determining if additional follow-up sessions with the students are warranted.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Sincerely,

Bradford L. Jackson, Ed.D                   Sara E. Ahern, Ed.D.                Michael T. Cournoyer
