HBA Meets at Fairview

by Bobby Blair 1/24/12

Playwright, author, songwriter and humorist Dan Hunter shared his insights about Holliston to Holliston Business Association members Monday night.

Dan Hunter of Hunter - Higgs, whose firm advocates effective strategies to build community support, spoke to Holliston Business Association members Monday night at the Fairview at Pinecrest. Hunter who hails from Iowa is the author of three books, Let's Keep Des Moines a Private Joke, The Search for Iowa (& We Don't Grow Potatoes) and Iowa? It's a State - of Mind. Part humorist and inspirational speaker, Hunter has the ability to tell people what he sees that no one else sees.  Hunter began his talk with "what is it that Holliston has that no other town has?" Hunter had apparently done his homework and didn't speak from notes when he noted the town's pride in their educational system beginning as far back as 1724. "This community is significant ,"he told the audience. When townspeople built the Carnegie Library in 1904 it was an important message of their time.

Hunter summed up Holliston's uniqueness when he mentioned Balancing Rock, the Arched Bridge, Casey at the Bat and the Mudville Vintage Baseball Team. Hunter said the ability to promote such town features is working with regional patnerships such as the MetroWest Visitors Bureau.

Hunter went on to acknowledge the HBA's own Holiday Stroll telling everyone, you don't think they have a stroll in Boston do you -- opening their business doors and inviting everyone in. Your Stroll is unique and tells people that we're neighbors and we care. Hunter ended his talk with a song which he made up from lyrics from early 20th century postcards.

HBA President John Drohan ended the evening by telling members that the Association's Community Action Fund had given out grants to six families in need. These are people who were in dire straits and had no place to turn.
