Fire and Ice Event May be Iffy

by Bobby Blair 1/30/12

Is it global warming or just a fluke that Lake Winthrop is still not safe to walk upon?

The weatherman has predicted temperatures above freezing during the daylight hours for the ensuing ten days. Night time degrees are forecasted to be several degrees above and below freezing. Does anyone remember the lake -- not freezing this late during the winter?

The Lake Winthrop Watershed Association is planning to hold their Annual Fire and Ice event on Sunday, February 5th -- weather permitting. Maybe their flyer should have read: ice permitting. To add to the no safe ice problem, Mother Nature is adding several more minutes of sun time to each day.

A brief inspection from the Point side of the lake on Sunday revealed not a soul on the lake. And with the thermometer expected to reach a balmy 52 degrees on Wednesday February 1st - well, Al Gore may just be on to something. Just seven more weeks till spring. Will this be the first winter that anyone can remember the lake not freezing over?

We still plan on having the "fire" part of the event, with firepits, s'mores, and good cheer.
