Two crashes Thursday eve separated by only a mile and minutes

Yet another two car crash Thursday late afternon at 4:55 p.m. involved two vehicles sending one person to the hospital and one car being towed. The accident happened at the intersection of Hollis and Washington Streets (below).

At 5:09 p.m. a minor crash was reported at the corner of Washington Path and Washington Street.

Does anyone think there should be a light at Hollis and Wash??

A light at Hollis and Washington is a no-brainer. You could then take out the extra pedestrian light between Hollis and Central (and maybe the other one after Cebtral), and get a real light at Central. It would be money well spent. Hollis and Washington is a nightmare at rush hour. I always go to Highland and Washington where the lights make it safer.

I would be interested in hearing from the police dept why they cannot place an officer to direct traffic at certain times of the day, like rush hours or school dismissal times. I would also suggest this would be helpful at Central and Washington. After reviewing the police log I can see they are very busy but it seems to me that officers can be spared a couple of hours of day for this duty and could certainly leave for emergencies elsewhere if necessary. At least until a light is installed.

Good points all! I also dread trying to cross the street at the these intersections as a pedestrian. I have noticed many times that cars trying to take left hand turns at these to intersections often ignore the people in the crosswalks and the blinking crosswalk lights. A real set of lights at these intersections would not increase the safety for drivers, but also pedestrians. I know that we want to preserve the quaint downtown setting, but we also need to think about safety!

While I purposefully rarely comment on issues outside of the school's perview, I, too, must express my support for a light at the corner of Washington and Hollis. The line going up Hollis Street at HS dismissal time is long and our least experienced drivers lack the patience to wait safely to turn left onto Washington. Brad Jackson Superintendent of Schools

I also put in my vote for lights at the intersection of Washington and Hollis, as well as Washington and Central. I wish the selectmen would reconsider doing this. I think it would make everything safer for drivers and pedestrians!

I agree with the other commenters about Washington and Hollis -- that is a terribly dangerous intersection, with far too many distractions and blind spots, and a lot of teen drivers. Same with Washington and Central. I dread making left turns out of Hollis or Central (and I am no teenager...). I don't mind the light at Woodland and Washington -- it makes sense to me, and traffic flows much better through there now. There were a lot of accidents there before.

Did I just comment a few weeks ago on another crash at the same location? Let me say the same thing again: please, let's talk about traffic lights at Hollis and Washington, and Washington and Central...with left turn arrows. Someone is going to get killed.

It's ridiculous that there is now a traffic light at the Woodland Street intersection but not at Hollis Street. Many of the drivers who must use that intersection are teenagers. You take your life into your hands every time you try to make a left turn at the end of Hollis.

Wash and Hollis is the most dangerous intersection I have ever seen. Anytime of daythe cars just play chicken. Why wasn't a light put there, does anyone know?
