State Representative Carolyn Dykema (D-Holliston) was honored to receive the 2012 Environmental Leadership Award from the Massachusetts Nursery and Landscape Association, Inc. (MNLA) at the annual New England Grows Convention on February 2, 2012.

“I’m very grateful to receive this award,” said Representative Dykema.  “MNLA member businesses are the backbone of our Commonwealth’s agriculture industry and they are the local businesses that drive our economy. Agriculture is part of our heritage here in Massachusetts and I’m proud of the work we’ve done together to promote the industry’s continued success.”

Rep. Dykema was pleased to work with the nursery and landscape community in developing a bill to provide an agricultural investment tax credit for small agricultural businesses, which is currently being considered by the Committee on Revenue.  Rep. Dykema also serves as a co-chair of the Water Infrastructure Finance Commission and is a member of the Joint Committee on the Environment, Natural Resources, & Agriculture.

“Not only is Representative Dykema a strong advocate for agriculture and the environment, but she is also a very real person.  Someone who will listen to you and try to help you with whatever issue you may have,” said Mark Ahronian, a past president of MNLA and President of Ahronian Landscaping and Design in Holliston.  “Representative Dykema is a true friend of agriculture and the environment.”

The MNLA is a non-profit organization that represents nursery and landscape professionals in Massachusetts.  The MNLA Environmental Leadership Award recognizes individuals who have consistently provided informed leadership in dealing with complex environmental issues.

Wow, sounds like a little bitterness in some of those comments...in my opinion Carolyn Dykema is an excellent State Representative, who involves herself in local and state issues with a passion...she is a welcome relief and her presence is very noticeable after eight years of Holliston having a part-time State Representative...when you win an election with 73% of the vote, you're drawing support across the entire political spectrum and there's a reason for that...people aren't stupid, they recognize when their town and their personal issues are being addressed in an intelligent and professional manner and they vote to have that individual continue to represent them.

Beth and Tom, if you read the comments without your Democrat blinders on, you'll understand that some people find it laughable that a person would drive their SUV to pick up an environmental award. And if she is so committed to the environment (as winning this award would indicate) why hasn't she made her opinion known on the Bullard St project?

Good for Carolyn. The environment and agriculture are areas that she has always focused. I agree with Tom, let's say "Good job" and not sink to political name calling. Are we all so cynical that we can not appreciate anyone's positive efforts?

Representative Dykema was recognized for the work she's done on agricultural and environmental issues. She is public servant who has taken a particular interest and devoted noteworthy energy to advocating in this area of policy in the Legislature. The article mentions her work on "an agricultural investment tax credit for small agricultural businesses" as one for instance -I'm not sure what about the term 'tax credit' is unclear for the Chorus of Good Cheer that seems to have convened here on the comment thread, but if folks feel there was someone else more deserving of recognition for their environmental leadership in this region maybe they should suggest that person for consideration -single someone better out for applause- instead of dragging up personal insult and partisan political rant and fouling this particular environment with it.

An Environmental Leadership Award??? That's a laugh. Rep. Dykema drives an SUV. Go figure, a Democrat making rules for all to follow except themselves! Dykema's got to go.

Dykema voted to increase taxes in a recession. Her votes burden business and kill jobs. We need a private sector economy in this state. Taking more of our money in taxes makes it harder for us to support a family. It's tough enough out here. She does not know, and needs to go.

Thanks Pete for mentioning the Bullard St. farm. This is a BIG issue for those who live on Bullard Street. Rep. Dykema, by her deafening silence, is NOT helping. They are getting very frustrated by her unwillingness to help. On another side, I was at the menorah lighting this past December. Rep. Dykema showed up JUST to be seen. She was there just long enough to shake hands with a couple of people. She never introduced herself to the Rabbi and left in the middle of the ceremony. This smacks of pure politics, not something a real, caring person would do. She left me flat! With her silence and coldness, she's got to go!

"Representative Dykema is a true friend of agriculture and the environment." "Not only is Representative Dykema a strong advocate for agriculture and the environment, but she is also a very real person. Someone who will listen to you and try to help you with whatever issue you may have," Congrats! I look forward to her assisting the many, many, many, Holliston voters in perserving the 100 year old trees on Bullard St. and preventing an industrial sized power plant from being built in an AGRICULTURAL/RESIDENTIAL zone. I would hope the she could assist in helping the BMFA realise there own mission and have the fields on Bullard street farmed again. Again congrats, I hope she can stay true to her convictions and is not swayed like so many of our politicians are by contributions and speacial interests.
