Holliston Walks Against Breast Cancer 2012

by Paul Saulnier 10/14/12

October 14, 2012. The rain stopped and the temperatures rose as hundreds of cancer survivors, supporters, and walkers gathered on the common in front of the Congregational Church.

Inside Town Hall, volunteers worked the raffle table and registered walkers.

Outside before the walk started, folks had a chance to meet up with old friends.

Even the pets (this is Charlie) were dressed in pink to show their support to find the cure.

The high school teams came together to walk. The Field Hockey team was well represented...

...as was the Volley Ball Team.

The high school football team and coaches walked the five miles as well.

The hockey team came out to support the effort.

Then every high schooler present posed for a group picture...

...as did the students from Miller and the Middle schools.

Event MC Jayne Jones (holding the mike) provided the opening remarks. The original group included Jayne, Maryellen Miller, Denise Cronin, and Kathy Chisholm. Amy Berg, Katie Connors, Dawn Waddell, and Pam Poor joined in soon thereafter. Maryann Marcoux joined in memory of her sister, Maryellen Miller.

Dr. Kathryn Ruddy, above with the mike, of Dana-Farber, was the guest speaker. Then cancer survivors in the crowd were offered the opportunity to come forward for a round of applause from the walkers.

Auxiliary Officer Corporal Jeff Oteri was on hand to make sure the walkers entered Hollis Street safely.

They're off. And they returned to the common for refreshments and raffle prizes.

The financial supporters were acknowledged on the event tee shirt. Jayne Jones estimated that this year's walk brought in over $51,000 from sponsors, the silent auction, and 430 walkers, about half of which were students.

The walk is accepting contributions until November 14, 2012, through their web site: http://www.hollistonwalks.org/
