Water Crisis on Appleyard Lane

by Bill Tobin 10/16/12

Three water main leaks on Appleyard Lane occured in less than 24 hours.

Over 70 homes are or were without water as of Monday at 11:00AM and again on Tuesday until ????.

The first leak occured at about 11:00 AM on Monday and was back on line by 7:00 PM on Monday evening.  That lasted until 11:00PM on Monday when the second  break in the water line erupted.  The water department crew, with help from the highway department, got that line repaired by 7:00 AM on Tuesday.

The leaks repaired, the holes filled in, all seemed back to normal.

That is until another new puddle appeared at about 10:00 AM on Tuesday, just down the street from the earlier leaks.

Dig Safe came by and another big dig began around noontime.

The crew,  weary from the all nighter just completed were once again looking for the leaky pipe on Applyyard Lane.

Several hours later, and 8 ft down, the leaking pipe was located.  These pipe lines were installed in the 1950's and 60's, and were considered to be the latest piping, and least expensive at that time.  However, in retrospect,  more durable and at the time more expensive piping should have been installed. It does pay off sometimes to use a higher grade material in the long run.

The residents of Appleyard Lane, Heritage Way and Roberta Circle affected by the water main leak may pick up bottled water at the Water Department Office in Town Hall until 8:00pm this (Tuesday) evening. Please call 508-429-0603 for further infotmation

"When the well is dry, we know the worth of water".Ben Franlin and the Water Commissioners have been telling us this fact for many years. Ask residents on Hollis and Appleyard whose "well" went dry if they now know the worth of water. We gladly pay a buck for 12 onces of "spring" water but complaint that $4.50 for 750 gallons delivered to our door is too much. Pub.
